Saturday Activity

土曜日学校

When the COVID-19 Pandemic emerged, schools in Kenya were closed until January 2021. In the unpredictable situation, to secure an alternative place for children and learning opportunity, we started Saturday Activity in September 2020. Initially, the program offered basic classes, such as that of Swahili language, and other classes for dance and art. When schools reopened, the program shifted into activities for dance and theatrical performance.

At the Saturday Activity, we serve breakfast and lunch. A parent of our student cooks those meals. Porridge is served for breakfast, while rice and green grams for lunch.

Due to the mass building removal at Mukuru Kwa Njenga in November 2021, the school building had to move away. After that, the Saturday Activity had been paused while waiting for the return of local residents and restoration of the classrooms. This activity was resumed in May 2022. When it was resumed, we started accepting children from the entire area. As a result, children who cannot go to school regularly, or boarding school students on holidays, also participate in this activity. Additionally, we started a program for preschoolers in November 2023.

When parents of attending students have to leave home for work or other reasons, students can bring their younger siblings.

From two-year-old children to secondary school students, we will continue this activity for children of various backgrounds.
